Hays Discovery

Tour Type: Beginner to Intermediate / Exposed water paddle

Start Time: 7:00am – 8:30am
Duration: 3 hours
Cost: $130/pp
*Discount for own equipment

Nestled between Brisbane and Redcliffe is a small and often overlooked estuarine wetland system called Hays inlet. Protected for almost 50 years, this important eco system supports an array of native wildlife, migratory birds and marine life. Our tour provides a great opportunity to experience some of the natural surrounds we sometimes overlook and is a fantastic way to start your day.

Starting off from Brighton park (Brighton), we follow the Houghton highway bridge to the far side of the inlet, taking in the coastal bushland backdrop of the southern conservation park. Once across, we head into the inlet for a closer look, discovering some of the native wildlife and marine life it supports. Skimming over sandbanks and exploring the creek mouths this part of the paddle offers a unique and different experience every time. After exploring the creek mouths, we paddle back along the conservation park shoreline, heading into the mouth of the North Pine River. Our tour then comes to an end, arriving at our finish location, Dohles Rocks, where facilities and refreshments are available.

After grabbing your complimentary drink from the Rocks café, the day doesn’t have to end there. You might want to visit the nearby Osprey house which has an information centre, boardwalk and even a nesting pole. This centre is lots of fun, with a live video feed of the nesting pole, animal displays and information on the different types of marine and wild life in the area. With plenty to see and do after the tour it can turn a good morning into a great day out.

We operate limited tours to this area because of permit and tidal restrictions, ensuring sustainable use of this conservation park zone. When booking please make sure you check all the months for availability on our bookings calendar or check our Facebook events. For transport we recommend parking at the finish location and organising a lift to the start location. Alternatively, transport can be arranged back to the start location at an additional cost. Please contact us directly or look below if you require more information about our tour.

As the rivers banks and suburbia meet again, we arrive at Acacia Park (Murrumba Downs) and the end of our tour where facilities are available.

You could head back to John Oxley reserve for a picnic lunch followed by a walk along the Carol Green walking track. Here we paddle past Brisbane’s iconic arts & recreational hub South Bank, once the world expo site in 1988. Rounding the next bend, we greeted the Brisbane Botanical gardens, with the heritage listed kangaroo point cliffs opposite. Along this final stretch of our tour passes Eagle street pier and the old customs house, both renowned for their restaurants and spectacular views of the river. The end of our tour is marked by the city’s most iconic bridge, the Story bridge, where lunch is not too far away.
Once off the water you have some free time to explore Captain Burke park positioned directly underneath the bridge.
